What should Wisconsin do with its projected $3 billion surplus?
Hassey Nevarez: Investing in education is essential. With a $3 billion surplus, we can enhance resources, reduce class sizes and support teacher development. This funding will improve student outcomes and ensure every child has access to quality education, fostering long-term economic stability and equity in our communities.
How should the state deal with its aging prisons in Waupun and Green Bay?
Hassey Nevarez: First I think we need to start advocating for smarter reforms that will involve enhancing training for guards, implementing technology for monitoring, and prioritizing rehabilitation over punishment. Focusing on data-driven approaches and community-based programs might also help reduce recidivism.
UW, schools and local government all want you to give them more money. What do you say?
Hassey Nevarez: I’d emphasize the importance of accountability and transparency in how funds are used. It’s crucial to ensure that any increase in funding leads to tangible improvements in education and local services. I’d advocate for a thorough evaluation of current spending and outcomes before agreeing to additional contributions.
